Videography

Fall 2018 | Throughout the Semester

Throughout the semester the class was given three independent projects. The first focused on editing. The second was to get the class used to filming pans and other basic shots, then to make a short video with them. The final project was to make an instructional video of some sort. The final had the class work getting clean shots, editing, and working with voice overs.

This video project was based on the television show Law and Order. The class was given the unedited videos of a particular shoot. The task at hand was to make the scene as close to the one that aired on television by professional editors. There could be differences in editing, but it had to be smooth. The professor made it clear to pay attention to where object were and which way people were facing so there is not a discrepancy from one scene to the next. For example, If someone already sat down when saying a line and the next second they are in the middle of sitting then the two do not work together. She encouraged the class to use J-cuts and L-cuts to solve inconstancy issues that arose.

The video haiku was for us to practice getting shots using different methods and various pans. The inspiration for haiku poems are typically about nature, and I did not want to stray from the traditional purpose of the poem. I was not the most skilled in taking smooth pans as the tripod was not the highest of quality. To fix the shots, I used Adobe After Effect's video stabilizer to make the shots look as clean as they could. The music I choose was to be light to follow the beauty of the earth provision. Then in the middle of the piece one can hear a crack of thunder and is shown the strength of nature. The music goes back to the original song, as nature reclaims destroyed areas and other disasters.

For the Final project I choose to make a DIY video for ring holders. My goal was to make a video that mimicked the quality and format seen in Youtube videos. I made the intro graphic in Adobe's After Effects. I took this course at the same time as the Motion Graphics course and benefited greatly as I could see their connection. Through this project I learned the importance of planning all the shots and stages, so there is not a gap in the process. I learned how to set of the frames so what needs to be seen in is the shot properly. This was the first time I have done a voice over in a video, so I quickly learned how to edit words so that it makes sense to the audience. I really enjoyed making this video and have gained much respect to those that make videos for their career, as there is so much more that is done than is seen in the final product.
