Typography II

Spring 2019 | Throughout the Semester

The first assignment given was to have our eye notice typography in the routine of our daily lives. We had to find the whole alphabet within our own parameter, for mine I chose within my house. We were given a week to take the photos and compile them into a piece. I chose a collage look because the photos were easier to crop and laid out in this way without distortion. There would be white space that drew the audiences attention off of the letters and because they were not standard in size.

The next assignment was to look at a social issue and make pieces from both sides of the argument. There had to be at least one from each side, but more could be made if experimentation was desired. I choose global warming. The orange and blue pieces were warnings to the public that it is in fact real and an issue. The yellow and purple are quotes from particular government officials that believe it is a hoax and want to stop the conversation on the topic. I chose to do a geometric design with the two sides. For these pieces, one may notice that their words are not the focus as they are hard to read unless blown up to a large size. This symbolizes that many in the general public to not go out of their way to research what is going on globally. This may be because it is confusing that the two sides contradict each other. In a global environmental studies course I took, it was stated that the success of a discourse, related to global warming, is to be seen by many. I gave both side equal value from one to the next as they are almost of equal value in the current stand point in the American Government. For both of these discourses the average american does not read much about both but relies on how one appears to be represented and by whom.

The second two pieces are working with transparency and importance. These are meant to be read, so they are more clearly legible than the other two. Our responsibility is in the warm colors to show severity and to put presser on the human race. The minor fact backs up why the CO2 rise is a problem, this is secondary information so it is more transparent and in a cool color so that it is read after the warm colored words.

This project was to use unconventional means to create a typographic book cover. I chose to use food for this project and the Hunger Games was the perfect fit. The blackberries are used to symbolize the berries that Katniss and Peeta eat at the end of the book. I chose to add the authors name in white as it creates the illusion of figure-ground manipulation, meaning the white lettering can be over it or the letters can be perceived as being cut out of the image. If I could redo this project I would retake the photo of the blackberries as it is not as clear as I would like it to be.

The final project was to create business cards for promoting ourselves. In this I used the initial logo I created in graphic design II. I made some revisions to the logo with the very insightful critique from my peers. There are triangles within the logo so I made that become the inspiration for my business cards. I used transparency to make them not the main focus of the card. After a critique the class believed that the first two business cards were the strong design and layout wise. The base color of the cards are the one of my logo. The ideas from this cards also make appearances in my website and in my resume, as consistency is key to identify the person or brand.
