Fall 2016 | Throughout the Semester

The first assignment was motif works. we created a stencil either with organic line or geometric. She made it clear the geometric motifs would result in a masculine manically feel, where as an organic motif would result in a feminine natural feel. We were taught about different composition styles. I chose to used radial design with an organic motif. This was done in Sharpe, as the assignment was to be done in Sharpe.

The next assignment was an experimentation of line work. Instead of using line to outline the object we had to make the object's form with lines. This assignment was to be completed on bristle paper with Sharpe as well.

The next assignments were created to have us work with different perspectives. For the first perspective piece I chose elephants with one point perspective, as they would be receding into the background. In the second perspective assignment, I chose to create a dinning room in two point perspective. She made the assignment to be done in Sharpe with Bristle paper again, as she wanted to focus on composition rather than material exploration for the beginning part of the semester. For both images I created form through stippling and hatching methods.

The form assignment open for subject matter, but she expressed that charcoal was the medium that would create form quite easily. I created a squid as the tentacles would be a great way of showing form with the light from above shining on them. I used the bubbles in the background to create a pattern as it was too flat without them.

The color theory assignment was done after composition and color theories had all been explained by the instructor. The piece was open ended. I created a radial design, one that comes to an imaginary point but not spiraling like the prior piece. The colors I used was cool analogous colors for the background, and warm analogous colors as the accent colors. This piece was created with acrylic paint.

For the Final piece, we were instructed to make anything with the compositions and colors we had learned about. I chose to create an asymmetrical design with a bit of radial deign in the background. I used warm colored acrylic paint for the representation of stress. She is painted with watercolor. I used the compliment purple and yellow in her hair with their mixed neutral as her dress. I chose this complimentary set as their is yellow within the backgrounds colors. this connects the two color themes. Her hair is heavy on the right side of the painting, so I used a darker blue-grey for the left side than the right to balance out the image.
